The Agora, or “Agora” as it is commonly called, is often mistaken for a relatively small “publishing company” out of Baltimore, Maryland. In fact, what began as a half-dozen like-minded writers in a small city row home is now a collection of over 20 of the world’s most powerful privately owned media companies. The name “Agora” was initially given by Bill Bonner to those half dozen writers in 1978. The word is a Greek term for “marketplace.” To Bill, he and his colleagues had conceived of the world’s first marketplace for ideas. Not just any ideas – ideas that you weren’t likely to get elsewhere. The world did not need any more “information.” Today the name “Agora” is synonymous with icons of the alternative press, and masters of direct marketing.

The city has been witness to events that have dramatically altered the course of the nation’s history. Over the centuries it has also been witness to more subtle changes in the way Americans work, play, and live. With heritage area designation, both the state of Maryland and the U.S. Congress have acknowledged Baltimore for its capacity to tell these important stories. Originally a department under the Office of the Mayor, the Baltimore National Heritage Area is now managed through the non-profit Baltimore Heritage Area Association, Inc. The association maintains strong partnerships with the city of Baltimore and Visit Baltimore (the city’s convention and visitors bureau). The association’s board of directors supervises the management of the heritage area. An advisory committee, comprised of civic and community leaders, provides guidance and support. With state heritage area designation, the Maryland Heritage Areas Authority provides technical, planning and limited financial assistance in promoting tourism development, economic growth, preservation, and conservation. With federal designation, the Baltimore National Heritage Area also receives technical, planning, and limited financial assistance from the National Park Service.

Welcome to America’s First Cathedral, the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary, in Baltimore, Maryland. In addition to our rank as a Minor Basilica, the church is also a National Shrine, Marian Shrine, National Historic Landmark, and Co-Cathedral of the Archdiocese of Baltimore, and we welcome all to visit and worship in what Pope John Paul II referred to as “the worldwide symbol of religious freedom.” The Baltimore Basilica, built from 1806-1821, was closed from April 2004 until November 2006, for a major restoration to return the church to its original design, as envisioned by America’s first bishop, John Carroll, and as planned by renowned architect Benjamin Henry Latrobe. The Basilica reopened with much fanfare and celebration, just in time to commemorate her 200th Anniversary. Within the first year of reopening, over 200,000 visitors were welcomed from all over the world, to walk through history, rejoice in faith, and admire the Basilica’s stunning architecture and artwork. St. Paul’s Parish, affectionately known as Old St. Paul’s, was founded in 1692 as a Mission Church of the Diocese of London. It moved to its present location in 1729 when Baltimore City was founded. The present Church was designed by renowned architect Richard Upjohn and was built from 1854-1856. The peacock mosaic behind the high altar was designed by Tiffany Studios in 1902. Several of the stained glass windows are notable works of art.
